Harmonica Players

Welcome to harmonica-players.com.  We are dedicated to promoting harmonica players and the harmonica as a very serious, versitile and beautiful musical instrument.

Whether you are wishing to learn the harmonica, or you are a professional, who has played for decades; I hope you enjoy your visit here, you'll bookmark it, and stop back again often.

We will continuously add more content, information, lessons, tip, resources, and equipment at affordable prices

The following are some of the harmonica players, who you will find to be excellent sources to listen to their playing and recordings to learn.

Big Walter Horton | Charlie McCoy | Charlie Musselwhite | Harmonicats | Howlin Wolf | James Cotton | Johnny Puleo | Larry Adler | Lee Oskar & War | Little Walter | Sonny Boy Williamson I | Sonny Boy Williamson II | Sonny Terry | Stevie Wonder | Tommy Reilly | Toots Thieleman | Will Griffin

I'm a 44 year student of the instrument.  After all of years of playing I've always said: "To steal from someone is plagiarism.  To lift licks from everybody is research and development."  Therefore, if you have a "hot lick" you do not wish lifted, then do not send it to me, play it around me, put it on a CD or put it anywhere on the web, because if I hear it, I like it, I lift it.  You will then hear one of my "hot licks".

I also do so in knowing that if I put it on a CD, play it live somewhere, or have it anywhere on a web site; others will be taking the seasoning/phrasing/embellishments that I've added and then add to the recipe themselves.  But, that's just how music happens, it is shared, and modified to fit the feel of the situation.  We all stand on the shoulders of giants.  Listening and playing along is the way we all had our harmonica lessons.

I enjoy the harmonica more than my other instruments, because with it I get to really "play" some music and I have found that you cannot entertain anybody else, unless and until you've entertained yourself first.  The harmonica by many is considered a "toy", but after spending time on this web site and/or playing your harmonicas, you will also see how much music you can really get out of a little tin box.

Everybody has tried to pick out a tune on the harmonica, because it is the easiest instrument to play.  Those who stick with it throughout their lives, and/or do some serious hours and years of practicing and playing are very good listening and learning examples of how to play the harmonica.  It is the least expensive of the major instruments to purchase and play.

Of all of the instruments I play, the harmonica to me is still the most challenging to master.  It is so expressive of an instrument and it fits in with every style of music.  It works great in blues, jazz, country, bluegrass, rock, pop, and classical.  I play Hohner Marine Band, Blues Harp, and Golden Melody harmonicas.

If you wish to learn to play the harmonica, I have selected several that are not only excellent for beginners, but are also the same harmonicas that those who have been playing for years play, including myself.  I also have some CDs of many harmonica players through history, that you may wish to obtain to play along with them.  That is how every serious harp player ever learned their licks, since the recordings of harmonicas came into being.

I'll be putting a few tips and suggestions into some easy harmonica lessons in the future, with recommendations and references as to who played something similar on what song, to help new and intermediate players grow in their skills and enjoyment.
